The story has to work, just like a machine. If I push on the accelerator pedal and have fourth gear engaged, the car must respond appropriately: sprint forward at full speed. If it slows down, someone on the assembly line wasn't very consistent. The right coherence must be maintained between scenes and characters. And I don't think it's easy. Sometimes, rereading, I realize that I wrote something on page 2 and on page 6, however, the exact opposite. And it happens for short stories. I wonder what will happen for my 1000 page novel.
I don't know an infallible method for coherence and I don't think saying "the editor will take care of it anyway, otherwise what can he do?" could be a valid solution. What method do you use? In the novel we have more time, or rather more pages of script available. But we certainly can't write an entire Hamlet for each dialogue. We need to mediate, in my opinion, and I'm the one who hates compromises. Colloquial language but at the same time well constructed, taking care also in this case, perhaps above all, of rhythm and musicality.
